About our Section:

The University at Buffalo Student Section of SAS (UB-SAS) formed in October of 2015. The goal of our section is to bring toghther graduate and undergraduate students of spectroscopy with members of our local SAS section as well as the Buffalo community at large.

The aims of our section are to:

1. Enhance the quality of spectroscopy student life through the promotion of student community, student education and industrial contact.

2. Promote spectroscopy within the university through undergraduate awareness, representation in student government and promotion of interdepartmental collaboration.

3. Participate in community outreach in the form of youth science education, community education (i.e. university tours or lectures) and promote the spectroscopy programs at the University at Buffalo to the spectroscopy community at large.

4. Follow the mission of the SAS, which is “to advance and disseminate knowledge and information concerning the art and science of spectroscopy and other allied sciences, to advance the professional standing and growth of the Society and its members, to coordinate cooperative endeavors of its individual members and sections, and to promote and maintain a close bond among its members.”

Towards these goals, we have partnered with the Niagara Frontier Regional SAS section to host our seminal student chapter events including 'Meet-the-Speaker' dinners with visiting SAS speakers, participating in the 2016 SAS Tour Speaker Program, and volunteering at a local elementary Science Night.

Please see more details of our events below and contact us if you have questions about our section or are interested in joing us on our mission.

On February 13th the UB-SAS Student Section at the University at Buffalo (UB) hosted a ‘Meet the Speaker’ dinner with SAS Fellow Dr. Volker Deckert. The dinner was held at Duff’s Wings, a local favorite famous for their hot wings. Students from across the UB Chemistry Department were invited to enjoy food and drinks, chat with Dr. Deckert in a casual setting, and learn about the SAS. The more adventurous in the group even sampled the infamous Duff’s “Death” hot-wings, definitely a bonding experience. Overall, the event was a great success and helped spread the word about the newly formed UB student section!
