Research Scientist, System Analytics & Chemometrics (December 26, 2006)

TITLE:
Ahura Corporation has an immediate full-time opening for a Research Scientist in the System Analytics & Chemometrics group.

DESCRIPTION:
The successful candidate will join a team responsible for the conception, development, and evaluation of embedded chemical intelligence for Ahura’s industry-leading devices. This person will create innovative systemic solutions based on application demands, human factors and failure mode analysis. There will be frequent opportunities to work directly with domain experts and opinion leaders, and attend technical conferences.

Requirements:

Qualified candidates hold an MS/PhD and 0-5 years industrial work experience in analytical chemistry or a similarly instrumental discipline, although stand-out applicants with BS degrees and equivalent industrial experience will also be considered. A strong grounding in instrumental analysis, as well as mathematics and statistics is essential. Experience developing and applying chemometric methods for a range of multichannel chemical instruments such NIR, Raman, MS, and chromatography is expected. Previous programming in Matlab, C/C++/C# , or Java is required. Experience with any of the following would be advantageous: Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic/Bayesian learning, sensitivity analysis and design optimization, ab initio and empirical uncertainty estimation. Support of hardware design, selection and evaluation is a given.

We currently have an opening in our West Palm Beach, Florida facility for an Instructor of FT-IR/NIR. Job Description:

Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Techniques for the Evaluation of Trace Evidence and the Examination of Questioned Documents.

Two postdoctoral positions will be filled at Duke University and City College of New York to conduct research on the application of SERS techniques for the identification of small organic molecules. The proposed research will focus on applications relevant to forensic science and art conservation. Subjects of particular interest are the identification of synthetic dyes and colorants as used in writing and printing inks, the identification of textile dyes, and the analysis of trace evidence.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, John Lombardi at City College and Tuan Vo-Dinh at Duke University, and in collaboration with scientists at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Crime Laboratory of the New York Police Department, the two postdoctoral fellows will conduct research and develop protocols for SERS analysis of trace amounts of the analytes of interest, evaluate the influence on SERS efficiency of different experimental conditions, and investigate the use of innovative non-destructive SERS methods such as SERS nanoprobes and matrix-transfer SERS.

While each fellow will be primarily based in one of the two research centers, working on separate parts of the research project, close cooperation between the research team is expected. Travel between sites and assignments to the laboratories of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for periods up to a month at a time are part of the research program. Both fellows will be expected to work closely with several graduate students and undergraduates to continue the research effort, to perform extensive validation on the newly established techniques and to begin assembling reference databases.

Both positions are currently for 20 months with the possibility of extension depending on continuing funding.

Postdoctoral researcher in Metal Enhanced Fluorescence (posted 10 August 2006)

Job Description:

The Metal Enhanced Fluorescence (MEF) effect is the observed increase in the quantum yield, and reduction in fluorescence lifetime, of weakly emitting fluorophores that are held in close proximity to noble metal surfaces that are roughened on the nanometre scale. One of the core elements of the research project involves fabricating nanopatterned surfaces and then studying the fundamental physics and chemistry of the MEF effect on these surfaces. This will lead to developing ultrasensitive measurement methods down to single molecule level suitable for use in microarrays and sensing. The research is interdisciplinary in nature, involving the development of novel nanostructured surfaces, oxide thin film generation, fluorescence spectroscopy, materials science studies of surfaces and thin films, photophysics, and instrumentation development.

Requirements:

The candidate should have an honours degree in chemistry, physics, or a related discipline. The candidate should have a good understanding of surface science (instrumentation and methods) and knowledgeable in a combination of the following techniques: laser materials processing, optical instrumentation development, AFM/SEM/TEM microscopy, Raman and/or Fluorescence spectroscopy, or thin film deposition.
