Society for Applied Spectroscopy

SAS Tour Speakers Program Hits Europe!

As part of a drive to expand as widely as possible the benefits of SAS membership, the Society has launched an SAS Tour Speakers Program in Europe in 2007. It is hoped that this will not only increase the benefit to current members, but also recruit new members from Europe.

The Society has been able to take advantage of one of its past-Presidents and an Honorary Member, Professor Peter Griffiths, being on sabbatical in Germany to launch the new Program, which we hope will become a regular feature in Europe, as it has been very successfully in the USA for many years. As the inaugural European Tour Speaker, Peter will give talks in the U.K., Germany and Austria.

Peter’s first talk will be on April 2nd in Dortmund, Germany, at ISAS (Institute for Analytical Sciences), hosted by Heiner Korte. This talk will be co-organised by ISAS and the German Working Party for Applied Spectroscopy. The title of this talk will be: Recent Developments in Vibrational Spectrometry.

The second talk will be part of two-day meeting organised by the U.K. Infrared and Raman Discussion Group, IRDG, taking place at Sheffield Hallam University, on 4th-5th April. The first day of this meeting is devoted to oral presentations by students, and a prize is presented to the student, who in the opinion of the judges gave the best overall presentation. Peter will be one of the judges; the prize, the Martin & Willis Prize, recognises two long-serving past Chairs of the IRDG, Dr. A.E. Martin and Professor Harry Willis. Peter’s talk, which will be given on 5th April, has the title: Depth of penetration in mid-infrared diffuse reflection spectroscopy and ramifications for near infrared microspectroscopy. (In recent years, several SAS members from the USA have spoken at the traditional “IRDG Christmas meeting” in London, and participated fully in the celebrations that followed!)

The third talk in the series, Surface-Enhanced Infrared Spectroscopy, will be given by Peter on April 19th in Vienna, Austria at the Technical University of Vienna, hosted by Bernhard Lendl.

John Chalmers, SAS International Delegate At-Large and President-Elect.
