A Method for Extending or Repairing Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Torches

This paper includes a simple means of operationally converting conventional inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torches of the popular Scott and Fassel design to an extended configuration which is useful for excluding atmospheric gases. Entrained atmospheric N2, CO2, and O2 otherwise act as undesirable quenching agents and contaminants in the ICP atomic spectrochemical determination of the elements oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. The simple torch extension described here excludes these entrained contaminents. The extension may be of any length and may be constructed of any nonconducting, high temperature, optically transparent material. Since the extension is not permanently sealed to the main torch, it may be conveniently installed or removed at will while the main torch remains in position in the ICP stand. The system can therefore be rapidly changed back and forth between the normal and extended modes of operation. The changeover is quickly performed without dismantling any portion of the ICP stand or torch assembly.
