Modified and More Versatile Direct-Reading Head for a 3.4-m Ebert Spectrograph

Volume 21, Number 1 (Feb. 1967) Page 36-39

Morris, J.; Van Staden, J.M.C.

A 3.4-m Ebert spectrograph, with its supplementary direct-reading head, was bought for this laboratory with certain requirements in mind:

• It should be a versatile photographic instrument, with high resolution and an optical system that would permit the variation of wavelength ranges and spectral orders, and the interchange of gratings.

• The instrument should provide a direct-reading head as an alternative to the photographic camera such that the changeover from photographic to direct-reading operation should be a simple and rapid procedure.

• It should be possible to alter the direct-reading program at will and with a minimum of trouble.
