It is often necessary to measure the spectra of toxic or corrosive compounds from which the operator and the delicate parts of the spectrometer must be protected. This is usually accomplished by flushing the spectrometer case with an inert gas and operating in a fume hood. This does not, however, entirely eliminate corrosion of exposed spectrometer parts from escaping vapors from the cell, and there is often some inconvenience in providing an adequate fume hood facility. We have overcome these difficulties by providing a simple, separate, vented cell compartment which is described here. We have found it particularly useful in studying the purity of silicon halides which are toxic and corrosive, but the general applicability of the cell enclosure is obvious.
