Fundamental Detection Limits in Spectrophotometric Analysis

Volume 39, Number 1 (Feb. 1985) Page 28-32

Harris, T.D.; Williams, A.M.

Recently developed methods for measuring small absorbances have potential application in trace element spectrophotometry. Achievement of low detection limits requires compatibility between the chemical systems and the instrumental characteristics. The factors that determine compatibility are examined systematically and a new basis for comparing sensitivity is derived. The comparison is shown to be superior to the Sandell sensitivity factor for this new instrumentation. This new sensitivity factor leads to guidelines for the selection of useful chemical systems for trace analysis.
