Molecular Spectrometry with a Holographically Scanned cw Dye Laser and Supersonic Cooling

The application of a high-resolution self-scanning cw dye laser to molecular spectrometry is explored. The laser uses optical feedback from a holographic pattern in a BaTiO3 crystal to control its frequency and linewidth. Fluorescence excitation spectra of molecular iodine in a supersonic expansion have been measured, demonstrating the potential of the new technique.
