A number of reports have previously appeared on the rapid, direct spectrochemical analysis of selected solid samples by slurry atomization using high solids nebulizers. Percent elemental recoveries vary widely throughout the slurry literature. In many cases, empirically determined correction factors have been utilized to compensate for recoveries which were low by as much as 5fold. The correction factors depended heavily on the size, density, and volatility of the solid particles as well as on the aerodynamic aerosol transport properties of the nebulizer/spray chamber system. The temperature and particle residence time in the atomization cell can also influence the observed elemental recovery, and in some cases, partial solubilization of selected metals during slurry preparation can play a major role. Sieving can sometimes improve the apparent recovery by reducing the effective particle size, but this procedure is not recommended, because it can lead to segregation and sampling errors with heterogeneous solid samples.
