The thermal fragmentation of organic compounds in a hydrogen/air flame is studied via Fourier transform flame infrared emission (FT-FIRE) spectroscopy. In this preliminary survey of more than 75 organic compounds, it is shown that compound and element-specific infrared emission bands are produced when organic compounds containing C, H, C1, F, S, and Si are combusted in the flame. Correlations of these infrared emission bands with possible combustion products are presented.
