Spectrum Line Distortion Caused by Step Filters

Spectrum line distortion, shown schematically in Figure 1, was recently encountered when a step filter was used directly in front of the slit of a stigmatic spectrograph. The character of the distortion was investigated by using a wide slit and observing the visible spectrum of mercury with an eyepiece. The striations were found to be due to interference fringes which occurred within the filter.
