It has long been recognized that fluorescent probes can give unique information about the complexities of their local environments. For example, fluorescence lifetimes provide information about diffusion coefficients in excimer formation, rates of intermolecular collisions in quenching experiments, fluidity in lipid vesicles, fluctuation within protein systems, and rates of solvation in normal liquids.
