Wiley IR and Raman Webinar Series with Curt Marcott:
13–14 September 2022

We are teaming up with Dr. Curt Marcott from Light Solutions on a great two-day Webinar Series called "Using IR and Raman Databases to Help Solve Real-World Chemical Problems" running from 13–14 September.

Using IR and Raman Databases to Help Solve Real-World Chemical Problems

10-11:00am EDT, 7-8:00am PDT

Join us for a two-part webinar series on the effective use of IR and Raman searching.

Sign up for both or choose a session that works best for you during this two-day series! Register today!

Get information on how infrared (IR) and Raman database searching can help you solve real-world chemical problems involving polymers and polypeptides (Part I) and microcontaminants (Part II). Dr. Curt Marcott, of Light Solutions, will present two diverse sessions on IR and Raman database searching, based on his extensive experience and applications in various subjects.

Webinar Key Points:

(i) Know the importance in ascertaining as much information as possible about the use of database searching. (ii) Learn what actions you can to take to solve chemical identification problems with information from spectral libraries. (iii) Apply these strategies to provide key insights into the analysis of polymeric materials and protein-containing samples. (iv) Using search strategies to help identify microcontaminants whose spectra are often highly overlapped with an IR-absorbing matrix.

SAS Early Career Interest Group (ECIG) August News

The Early Career Interest Group (ECIG) is happy to announce this year's winners of Early Career Travel Awards: Dr. Olga Eremina and Dr. Malama Chisanga.

Dr. Olga Eremina

Olga obtained her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Lomonosov Moscow State University. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California, in Dr. Cristina Zavaleta's research lab, where she utilizes SERS-based sensors for monitoring human and environmental health. At SciX 2022, she will be giving the presentation "Breaking Multiplexity Limits of SERS Imaging to Enable Highly Specific Molecular Imaging and Spatial Profiling of Diseased Tissues". In this talk, she will describe her work with multiplexed Raman imaging to distinguish 26 different SERS nanoparticles with subcellular resolution.

Dr. Malama Chisanga

Malama received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Manchester. Currently, he is working in Dr. Jean-Francois Masson's group at the University of Montreal as a postdoctoral fellow. In his research, Malama is using SERS sensors and chemometrics for medical and clinical applications. Malama's presentation at SciX 2022 is titled "SERS on a chip: Multiplexed detection of cross-reactivity of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies in clinical samples". His talk will focus on multiplexed detection of antibody cross-reactivity using SERS-active tags that are immobilized on a chip within a microfluidic cell.

These awards, in the amount of $750 each, will be used to assist the awardees with travel expenses related to attending SciX 2022. The ECIG would also like to thank all of the other applicants for taking the time to apply for this year's award. It was an honor to learn about each of you and the exciting research you are conducting.

Travel Grants for SciX 2022 and PITTCON 2023

SciX 2022 is coming up fast! Don't forget that the Coblentz Society awards Travel and Childcare Grants for early-career professionals to assist in defraying the cost of travel to SciX and other conferences. The application deadline is 15 August for fall and winter conferences and 15 January for spring and summer conferences. For more details, see the Society website's Grants and Scholarships page.

PITTCON 2023 Abstract Submission Open

Abstracts for PITTCON 2023 are due by 2 September 2022. The meeting is scheduled to be in person 18-22 March 2023 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Registration for the meeting will commence on 1 November 2022, so please keep your eye posted on the PITTCON website for that information.

Virtual Symposium Recap: Molecular Spectroscopy in Practice: Investigating Problems in Industry and Beyond

SAS and Coblentz are continuing their work with Spectroscopy Magazine to bring vibrational spectroscopy to a broader audience. This 27-28 July, we presented a two-day event that helps attendees learn about new methods that are relevant to everyday materials: foods, cosmetics, polymers, and even drinking water!

Photonics Spectra Spectroscopy Virtual Conference Recap 2022

SAS and Coblentz were proud to partner with Photonics Media to provide speakers for the Inaugural Photonics Spectra Spectroscopy (PSS) Virtual Conference in April. The conference had four programs: Emerging Technologies, Data Analysis, Biospectroscopy, and Embedded Spectroscopy. This and other outreach efforts raise the visibility of SAS, revenue, and give us the ability to market with thousands of new potential members.
