Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh January and February Meetings
The Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) invites all interested attendees to their upcoming January and February meetings, which are occurring both in-person (at Duquesne University) and virtually.
On 18 January 2023, Dr. Alexis Franks will be discussing the "Effect of Lead on Children" and Dr. Amanda Hummon from the Ohio State University will present "Spatial SILAC: Exploring Spatially-Defined Changes to the Proteome". Advanced registration for both in-person and virtual attendance is required and can be found at the link above. In-Person registration must be completed by Noon on Tuesday, 10 January 2023.
On 15 February 2023, Joseph Sbaffoni will present, "The Rescue of Nine Miners from Quecreek Mine in Somerset County", and Dr. Jeff Anker from Clemson University will give a talk on "Spectrochemical Sensing and Imaging on the Surface of Implanted Medical Devices to Detect and Elucidate Infection Biochemistry". In-Person and virtual registration for the SSP February meeting will be available after 18 January 2023.

Multimodal Functional OCT for Clinical Assessment of Oral Soft and Hard Tissue Conditions

Abstract: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique providing cross-sectional images of tissue microstructures and functional information with high resolution. Hrebesh reports on the development of an integrated multimodal functional OCT and angiographic imaging system with a light-induced autofluorescence (LIAF) imaging mode capable of providing anatomical, functional, and molecular imaging for in vivo clinical oral imaging applications. The OCT imaging is based on a high-speed, long-range vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) source with linearized frequency, while the LIAF is based on a blue excitation light source (405 nm) with an RGB digital camera and a 450 nm cut-on broadband optical filter. He demonstrates the clinical imaging feasibility of the system using an extraoral patient imaging interface and a compact hand-held intraoral imaging system for the assessment of various soft- and hard-tissue conditions, including caries, hypomineralization, dental biofilm, gingival tissue microstructural changes, and the visualization and quantification of gingival microvasculature.
Hrebesh M. Subhash, PhD, isÂ a Senior PrincipalÂ Scientist with the Global Devices and Clinical Method Development Division of Colgate Palmolive, USA. He holds a doctorate degree in Biomedical Optics from Yamagata University, Japan, and dual master's degrees in Photonics TechnologyÂ and Applied Electronics from CochinÂ University of Science and Technology, India, and the Technical University of Eindhoven, Netherlands, respectively. Dr. Hrebesh has worked previously withÂ Spanish National Research Council and MIT-M Vision Consortium (Madrid, Spain), National Biophotonics and Imaging Platform Ireland (Galway, Ireland), Compact Imaging Inc. (Mountain View, California), Oregon Hearing Research Institute and Case Eye Institute (Portland, Oregon), Oregon Health and Science University (Portland, Oregon), Human Sensing and Functional Sensor Engineering Lab (Yamagata, Japan) and Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (Indore, India). His research interests and expertise include biomedical Optics, optical instrumentation, wearableÂ sensors and medical imaging,Â signal and image processing, robotics, and AI/ML particularly in the development of cutting-edge and translational biophotonics technologies that interface and bridge basic engineering research and medical diagnosis and interventions. He has authored more than 120 peer reviewed research articles in major scientific journals and conferences and he has also contributed five book chapters in the field of optical imaging and clinical applications. He has 10 issued patents and 20-plus pending patents.

To join the Early Career Interest Group (ECIG), you must now be a member of SAS in good standing, and you must have completed your last terminal degree within the past ten years. Current students (undergraduate and graduate) are not eligible for membership in ECIG.
Early Career Workshop at Pittcon 2023
We are pleased to announce that we will be running a workshop at PITTCON, "Leveraging Your Online Presence to Foster a Successful Career in Spectroscopy". Many great scientists struggle with promoting the contributions they make to their field via social media.Â This workshop will foster discussions of social media dos and don'ts using personal experience and anecdotes. We encourage people of all ages to attend and to share their own stories with the shared goal of career advancement.
This workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, 21 March 2023 at 2:00 PM in room 202B PC-1973.
SAS Member in Memoriam: Roy Koirtyohann
Longtime SAS member Roy Koirtyohann passed away in mid-November at the age of 92. His formal obituary can be found at: https://www.columbiatribune.com/obituaries/pclm0358524
The late Bill Fateley wrote about Roy in his book, Science or Fiction (on page 98), at the time under a pseudonym:

At one time, Roy [Koirtyohann] and I were Chemistry Department Heads of the University of Missouri and Kansas State University, respectively. One morning I had a chemical salesman visit me in my office. He asked me if I knew that the Chemistry Department at the University of Missouri had been struck by lightning the night before. No, I had not yet been informed. I could hardly wait until the salesman departed so I could call Roy to inquire about the damage.
I placed the call to Roy. The following is the conversation that occurred.
First secretary: "Chemistry Department"
Me: "I want to speak to Roy".
First secretary: "who may I say is calling?"
Some hesitation, First secretary: "Just a minute".
Second secretary: "May I help you?"
Me: "Yes, I want to speak to Roy".
Second secretary: "Who may I say is calling?"
Me: "God, and if I do not get to speak to him immediately – I shall strike again".
I waited briefly again.
Roy: "Hi Bill".
Now, how could he have known it was me?
