Applied Spectroscopy  May 69[5]

The Applied Spectroscopy May issue cover features an overview of the instruments and findings of Michael W. George, James A. Calladine, Raphael Horvath, Andrew J. Davies, Alisdair Wriglesworth, and Xue-Zhong Sun from their work entitled, ‘‘Probing Organometallic Reactions by Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy in Solution and in the Solid State Using Quantum Cascade Lasers’’, pp. 519–524. The photochemistry and photophysics of a number of metal carbonyl compounds have been examined on the nanosecond and microsecond timescales using a time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectrometer using an external cavity quantum cascade laser (QCL) as the infrared source. The high flux and tunability of QCLs makes them suited for a wide range of measurements. The photochemistry of W(CO)6 in an alkane solution is monitored and very sensitive measurements are shown to be possible using this approach, enabling absorbance changes of less than 10-6 Δabsorbance to be measured. The kinetics of C-H activation of Cp*Rh(CO)(C6H12) to form Cp*Rh(CO)(C6H11)H are measured and found to be in excellent agreement with measurements from a laser-based ultrafast spectrometer. Finally, diffuse reflectance measurements of fac-[Re(CO)3(4,4'-bpy)2Br] are shown, which demonstrate the ability to look at photochemical and photophysical processes in the solid state. The application of fast TRIR spectroscopy is expected to continue to be a powerful tool to probe photochemical and photophysical processes.
