SAS Social Media 101

SAS shares news through social media and our members use social media to stay connected. Here are a few tips and tricks you can use to keep in touch!

Twitter: "Tweets" are 140 characters or less. You can also add websites and pictures. Your username is called your "handle" and starts with @. The official twitter handles for SAS are @SocAppSpec for news about the society, and @AppliedSpec for the journal Applied Spectroscopy! We will be using Twitter for the photo contest at SciX 2015 and future events!

Facebook: Your personal page can be used to share your status and you can add pictures and websites as well. You can comment or post to other people's pages or a group page. SAS has a group page called Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

LinkedIn: Your personal page includes information about your education and experience and you can include your resume and job history as well. People tend to use LinkedIn more professionally. You can make connections with people you may know and join groups where you can have discussions. SAS are part of several groups including Society for Applied Spectroscopy and Women in Spectroscopy. LabTube: It's like YouTube but for Scientists! SAS has a channel called Society for Applied Spectroscopy. We encourage our members to send us videos of their events and short videos on why they love SAS. Video files can be in any of the following formats: .avi .mpeg .wmv .flv .mov .mp4 .mpg and the maximum file size is 2000 MB. You can share your video with the web editor, Lynn Zhang, via dropbox (xinyan.zh@gmail.com) and she'll post it on the SAS channel!

Hashtags: While not a form of social media in itself, hashtags are like keywords and can be used in any form of social media. For example, if you tweet a message or picture on Twitter with the hashtag #SASpec, you can search for all the tweets that contain the same hashtag! The official SAS hashtags are #SASpec  #SASwomen #SASstudents and #AppliedSpec.

SAS public news gmail account: If you have news you would like posted on the News and Event page of the website and shared through social media you can send an email to sas.publicnews@gmail.com. The Publicity Committee manages this account and works closely with the Website Committee and the Newsletter.
